Hubbard Glacier

Its been a day of perfection today. It really doesn't get any better than this and the weather has been fine and sunny and even a little warm if you can find a spot to escape the wind.

The Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It measures 122km in length and drops 365 metres into the depths of the bay. It was a monster!!  Unlike many of the glaciers in the world today that are retreating this one is advancing rapidly and is known as the galloping glacier. It is advancing towards the Gulf of Alaska into a pristine area known as Disenchantment Bay.

We had breakfast up in the restaurant and had the most spectacular view of the glacier from there.

We counted 12 glaciers that were contributaries of the main glacier and they were only the ones that we could see.

There were lots of carvings while we were up on deck. The noise they made were deafening and sounded like thunder.

After a couple of hours of up close viewing it was time to make our way back out into Yakutat Bay.
